First Post in Awhile

Well, I have not posted in almost a year. I have recently become interested in someone's blog - enough to bookmark it and read it on a regular basis. I don't quite get how people write something that other people, total strangers in fact, will actually be interested in reading day after day. The exception, of course, is fan fiction and fan vids. I am not nearly motivated enough to write fan fiction. I do like making fan vids, but it takes me forever to make even one vid. I am only working on my second vid now. It is for OZ. I also have the problem of watching everything on DVD years after everyone else online has moved on to another fandom.

I do watch Supernatural, which is a very popular fandom right now.

I think my problem is I can't decide what my journal is for. Is it strictly about media I am interested in? What's going on in my life? I mean, what it is really for is so I can friend the other journals I am interested in and comment without being anonymous. But since I have it, it seems like I should post to it. And I can certainly ramble on when motivated.

So here is my regular online activity as illustrated by my toolbar bookmarks:

Live Journal is my home page, mostly so I can check the journals I have "friended". I think I need to trim down the list that show up on my friends page though. It is getting a little unwieldy.

First bookmark is remote access to work so I can log on from home. I am a computer programmer and do that very frequently, though I don't actually work out of my home.

Next bookmark is Google. Use it constantly. Often to look up answers to random questions my daughter asks such as "What is ANZAC Day?" and "What is the doctor looking for when she checks your reflexes?" Or searches prompted by things I read on other people's blogs and bulletin board posts.

Amazon - used to buy books here all the time. I believe this bookmark is a link so a donation will be made to Amnesty International when I buy from Amazon. If it isn't, it should be.

eBay - Not sure why this is bookmarked on my toolbar actually, though I occasionally buy things on eBay.

Daily Fic - this is a drop-down containing links to the web sites of my five favorite online fiction authors so I can open them all at once in tabs and check quickly for updates.

AT&T Webmail - my email

Slash - another drop-down, but this one only has 2 sites in it: my favorite fan vidder and a page of OZ links

Pogo - I love to play games online

Webkinz - I got an account so I could have a Webkinz and visit my daughter's Webkinz

Mothering.com - Awesome Natural Family Living and Attachment Parenting forum. The only forum I frequent on a regular basis.

ItsYourTurn - This is my most recently added bookmark. When I was young I played Pente with my father a lot. My current addiction is playing Pente on this site, which facilitates playing games sort of by email. I will put aside all modesty and say I am a very good Pente player. If you think you can beat me come on over to itsyourturn.com and invite me to play a game. My user ID is AdeleMommy.

My first result was so clearly wrong I went back and changed my response to a few questions where I was torn between two answers and then got this which, while still not perfect, seems to fit a little better:

<lj-embed id="2" />

Black Donnellys

Just watched the premiere of The Black Donnellys. For the second time actually, because I got a sneak peak preview DVD from Netflix a few weeks ago. I enjoyed the show a lot, even the second time. It is right up my alley of course -- dark, brothers, love, and violence.

Last night I was watching Studio 60 and I said to my husband, "This is just like Sopranos. Whenever someone starts to use drugs and hide it, I'm wondering how long it will take before Danny [or in Sopranos, Tony] finds out."

My husband responded, "And how much hurt Danny will put on him when he does find out."

It is wonderful to have someone who knows me so well and still loves me. Unfortunately, the answer to those questions for Studio 60 are probably, "A long time." and "Not much." We'll see...

Brokeback Christmas

My amazing husband, who always gets me wonderful Christmas presents without any prompting, gave me two framed Brokeback Mountain posters. One of the posters I was not aware existed. It shows Ennis hugging Jack from behind. My husband is OK with my hanging these posters in our bedroom and even hung them for me today. Am I unbelievably lucky or what?

It has been raining here non-stop for two days now. Every time I look out the window (which is about 30 times a day -- I must like torturing myself) I see this light, steady, drop, drop, drop. No thunder and lightning. No wind whipping the trees around. Nothing exciting. Just rain rain rain. And we're supposed to have two more days of this. I can't stand it.

I loved Thursday's Supernatural. It had all the brother interaction I watch for.
Highlander

Found out a new Highlander movie finished filming in December 2005. I loved the television series but have not been too impressed with the movies. I hope this one is good. At least it included Peter Wingfield as Methos. In any case, the new movie should stimulate a resurgence of Highlander fan fiction, which is always a good thing. The official movie site is here: http://highlander-thesource.com/

Brokeback Mountain DVD

I bought the Brokeback Mountain DVD the day it came out (4/4). Unfortunately, I accidentally got the full-screen version. I watched it anyway. Then the next day my husband got the wide-screen version for me and I watched it all the way through. Since then I have watched the beginning when they are herding sheep on Brokeback many times and then skipped ahead to other favorite scenes. I think the extras are kind of weak, though I did enjoy the cowboy featurette. I hope they plan to put out a loaded DVD sometime. I would love commentary by Ang Lee, Heath, Jake, and of course, deleted scenes.

Here are my 10 favorite scenes in the order they appear in the movie.

Brokeback Moments

1. When Jack poses against his truck and gives Ennis a "look" and then lowers his head.
2. When Ennis comes back after losing the supplies because of the bear and Jack starts to clean the blood off his face.
3. The first (and only real) sex scene.
4. The playing turning to fighting right before they come down off the mountain.
5. When Ennis beats up the bikers at the 4th of July celebration.
6. The hugging and kissing reunion when Jack comes back for the first time after 4 years.
7. The conversation when Jack comes to WY after Ennis tells him about his divorce.
8. Jack's Thanksgiving.
9. The confrontation between Jack and Ennis over Mexico, including Jack's Brokeback Mountain speech.
10. The flashback to hugging by the campfire.

David Feintuch

I just found out moments ago that David Feintuch died on March 16. I am stunned. He was one of those authors I "discovered" late, read everything I could find by him in a matter of weeks, and then regularly checked to see if he had something new coming out. I know I said the same thing about Octavia Butler, but I just can't believe there won't ever be any more books by Feintuch.

I have finished Sebastian. I think it was quite good. It ended in a satisfying way while still obviously being the first book of a series.

I am so glad Prison Break is back! I thought last week's ep did an admirable job of building and maintaining tension even though we all knew Lincoln was not actually going to be executed. It's fun to speculate on how the execution will be delayed.

Did I miss a new episode of Supernatural last week?

I have officially stopped watching The Apprentice. It was getting tedious and I was finding Trump more and more annoying. I am still watching Amazing Race and Survivor.

I read Brokeback Mountain comes out on DVD April 4. Hooray!

Sebastian

I'm reading Anne Bishop's latest book, Sebastian now. I'm enjoying it. It has all the elements that all Anne Bishop books seem to have: dark, violent world; strong, magical, central male character with supernatural sex appeal; even stronger, more magical female character who is so powerful she is an outcast. But this world is a little different from her dark jewels universe and I find it interesting. And anyway, I like those elements!

Octavia Butler

...passed away February 24. She was one of my favorite science fiction authors. Her last book was Fledgling. Not my favorite of hers, but quite good. I still can't really believe there aren't going to be any new books by her.

Feeling Better

I went to work yesterday, but I am finally feeling better today. My husband is feeling better too and my daughter is on the road to recovery.

What a relief!

I saw Brokeback Mountain again on Monday. It still holds my interest amazingly enough. I think the film copy at my local theater is deteriorating though. There were little black specks on some scenes. I am ready to get the DVD now.

I ordered the Brokeback soundtrack from amazon last night. Also the new book by Anne Bishop and the original cast recording of Godspell. And a Max and Ruby DVD so there will be something for my daughter when the box arrives.

No Supernatural last night. Boo. Hiss.

I have finished Cell by Stephen King. A fun read and decent book. Not on the level of his Dark Tower series of course, but certainly enjoyable. Some aspects of the book reminded me of The Stand and some reminded me of Tommyknockers.

UU

I joined the local UU church yesterday as planned. I almost didn't because all three of us were still sick, but in the end I decided I was well enough to go, and my husband said it was better than waiting months for the next time to join, or just joining without the ceremony and then having a hollow ceremony later. I agreed. So now I am a member of a church for the first time in my life. Kind of weird...

Crash
